United Kingdom Records the Country's First Birth Following a Uterus Transplant

In February 2025, the United Kingdom recorded its first birth following a successful uterus transplant. The recipient, who had been diagnosed with a rare congenital condition that prevented the development of her uterus, received the donated organ from her sister. An embryo created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) had been cryopreserved beforehand and was successfully transferred on the first attempt.

All of the medical professionals involved volunteered their services, and the surgical procedures were fully funded through a clinical pilot programme led by the charity Womb Transplant UK. To date, four uterus transplants have been performed in the United Kingdom. While the first involved a living donor, the three subsequent procedures used uteri donated by deceased donors. Approximately ten additional candidates are currently undergoing assessment for future transplants.

The world's first birth following a uterus transplant took place in Sweden in 2014. Since then, more than 100 uterus transplant procedures have been performed worldwide, resulting in at least 50 births across countries including the United States, China, France, Germany, India, and Türkiye. The British milestone therefore represents not only a significant clinical achievement but also signals important developments for the international assisted reproduction sector.
